Sticky Notes in Windows 10: How to Use, Save, Format, Backup, Restore

If you’re a regular user of Sticky Notes under the Windows 10/8/7 platform, these tips might come in handy.

This article will discuss how you can save, format, backup, and restore sticky notes; it also tells you how you can turn on the Sticky Note delete confirmation box in case you’ve turned it off earlier.

Sticky Notes has become a trusted app in Windows Store, so some of these tips might not work for some versions.

So before you begin applying these tips and tricks, do well to import your Sticky Notes from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

How to Use Sticky Notes on Windows 10?

  • To open a new Note, type sticky in your Start search and then hit Enter.
  • While changing the color of the Sticky Note, drag it from the bottom right corner.
  • To change its color, right-click the Note and then click the color you want. For Windows 10 v1607 and later, you have to click the three dots appearing at the top.
  • To create a new Note, click on the ‘+’ sign in the top left corner.
  • To close the Sticky Note, right-click its taskbar icon and select Close Window. You will see the earlier Notes if you reopen the Sticky Notes now. The Notes will reappear precisely where you left them even when you restart your Windows computer.
  • And to delete a Sticky Note, click on the ‘x’ mark in its top right corner. In Windows 10, you have to click on the ‘trash can’ icon.

Once your Sticky Notes starts running, you can use the following keyboard shortcut keys to format its text:

The following shortcut keys can be used to edit stick Notes:

  • Bold: Ctrl+B
  • Italics: Ctrl+I
  • Underline: Ctrl+U
  • Strikethrough: Ctrl+T
  • Bullet list: Ctrl+Shift+L
  • Increase the size of text: Ctrl+Shift+>
  • Decrease the size of the text: Ctrl+Shift+<

Check out the options each time you press Ctrl + Shift + L (1 to 5 times). i.e., Getting Roman numerals: Press 5 times, Ctrl+Shift+L.

  • Single line space: Ctrl+1
  • Double line space: Ctrl+2
  • Right Align: Ctrl+R
  • Center align: Ctrl+E
  • Left Align: Ctrl+L
  • 1.5 line space: Ctrl+5
  • Capitalize (or otherwise) highlighted letters: Ctrl+Shift+A, Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, etc. of course, work as usual.

How to Back Up, Save, and Restore Sticky Notes on Windows?

To backup Sticky Notes in Windows 10, do the following:

Copy all the folders and files from the following location to another location:

%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbwe

However, you should know that your Notes are stored in a file named plum.sqlite, which is an SQL extension, located in the following folder:

%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState

You can copy this plum.SQLite elsewhere as a backup and then use it as well to restore on the same or different Windows 10 computer.

If you are using earlier versions of Windows, you can back up the Windows Sticky Notes by creating a backup of this file in another location:

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Sticky Notes\StickyNotes.snt

You may have to show the hidden/system files through the Folder Options.

However, to restore it, delete the Sticky Notes from your Desktop and copy and paste them backed up on into this folder:

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Sticky Notes folder

When Your Sticky Notes Will Not Start Up on Boot?

When your Sticky Notes is still opened while your Windows is shutting down, it will reopen automatically.

If, for any reason, you find out that this does not happen, then you have to create a shortcut of Sticky Notes in the Desktop and then place it in your Windows Startup folder. You can use the following for the location field

%windir%\system32\StikyNot.exe

How to Turn the Sticky Notes Delete Warning Back on?

If, at a point, on selecting delete, you opted not to have the confirmation box show up again, by selecting Don’t Display this message again, and you want to receive the delete confirmation box, follow the steps below:

  • Open the Registry Editor and locate the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\StickyNotes

Now, go ahead and delete the value called PROMPT_ON_DELETE or set its value to 1.

And if you wish to stay away from the Windows registry, then you could download a freeware to fix the issue quickly.

How to Change Sticky Notes Font?

Windows uses the Segoe Print font by default. But changing the default font is not supported in Sticky Notes.

So what you can do is type in your text in the desired font in a text editor and then copy-paste it on your Sticky Notes. The Sticky Note will display the text in that font.
