Did you love the recent release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker? Really, who didn’t? It was a great film, but it was more significant because it re-ignited my passion for Star Wars.

Like me, you loved all the movies and watched each one several times. This is a blog post on Star Wars movies in chronological order.

The Star Wars Universe has had an incredible impact on modern culture since 1977. Since then, the Star Wars canon has included live-action movies, animated movies, and movies that combine animation and live-action.

It might seem confusing, especially trying to piece together timelines, hence this article on Star Wars movies in order of chronology.

People of all ages love watching and talking about Star Wars. We love our characters and watch them struggle to overcome the odds.

Watch any movie, and you’ll understand what I mean. Everyone asks, “Are Star Wars movies in order?” In this article, we will answer that question for you.

How Many Star Wars Movies Are There

For the Movieverse, there are 12 select movies in the Star Wars Franchise, excluding the associated series.

List of Star Wars Movies in Order of Chronology

1. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)

  • Cast: Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, and Samuel L. Jackson.

In order of chronology, the movie Star Wars is called Phantom Menace. Two Jedi get away from a threatening barricade to find partners and run over a bit fellow who might carry equilibrium to the Force. Yet, the long-dormant Sith reemerge to guarantee their unique brilliance.

2. Star Wars: Episode II – Attack Of The Clones (2002)

  • Cast: Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Ten years after the occurrences in ‘The Phantom Menace,’ Padmé Amidala is now a Senator representing her homeworld of Naboo.

With Count Dooku as their leader, a faction of political separatists attempts to kill her. There are not enough Jedi to protect the Republic against this threat, so Chancellor Palpatine enlists the aid of Jango Fett, who promises that his army of clones will handle this situation.

Meanwhile, Obi-Wan Kenobi continues to train Anakin Skywalker, who fears that the Jedi Code will forbid his growing romance with Amidala.  

This is the second installment in the timeline of Star Wars movies in chronological order.

3. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008)

Following the Republic’s victory over Christophsis, Anakin and his new apprentice, Ahsoka Tano, must rescue Jabba, the Hutt’s kidnapped son. Political plots complicate his mission.  

4. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge Of The Sith (2005)

  • Cast: Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, and Samuel L. Jackson.

It’s been three years since the Clone Wars started. The Republic confronts Count Dooku and the Separatists with the help of the Jedi.

As new threats mount, the Jedi Council sends Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker to aid the captured Prime Minister.

Subsequently, Anakin feels ready to be promoted to Jedi Master. Obi-Wan is hunting down General Grievous Separatists.

When Anakin sees the future of pain and suffering standing in Padme’s way, he turns to Master Yoda for advice. When Darth Sidious fulfills Order 66, most of everything the Jedi built will be destroyed.

He experiences the birth of Darth Vader, feels the betrayal that leads to hatred between the two brothers, and witnesses the power of hope.  

5. Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

  • Cast: Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson.

As the demand for hyperfuel and other resources grows, Han Solo finds himself in the middle of a heist alongside other criminals, where they adventure with Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian. They find themselves in a situation and expose the underworld of the criminal.

6. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

  • Cast: Felicity Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Diego Luna.

In a short time, just before the New Hope event, we find ourselves in the middle of a galactic war between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire.

Follow a group of rogue spies hoping to restore peace to the galaxy with the desperate goal of retrieving the Death Star, a secret plot for weapons of mass destruction.

7. Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)

  • Cast: Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford.

Under the orders of the cruel Darth Vader, the Imperial Army holds Princess Leia hostage to put down the rebellion against the Galactic Empire.

Millennium Falcon captains Luke Skywalker and Han Solo work with droid duos R2-D2 and C-3PO to rescue the beautiful princess, aid the Rebel Alliance, and restore freedom and justice to the galaxy.

Although Episode IV is not the first movie on the list of Star Wars movies in order of chronology, it was the first to be made. Check the year.

8. Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

  • Cast: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher.

Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca face off against attacks from the Imperial Army and their AT-AT Walkers on the ice planet Hoth.

As Han and Leia flee to the Millennium Falcon, Luke travels to Dagobah in search of Yoda. When the Dark Side of the Force invites him to the ultimate duel with Darth Vader, Luke cannot survive without the help of the Jedi Master.

9. Star Wars: Episode VI – Return Of The Jedi (1983)

  • Cast: Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford.

When the evil Emperor Palpatine oversees the construction of a new Death Star by Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire, the smuggler Han Solo is his friend Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Lando Calrissian, and Chewbacca.

Additionally, After training Luke Skywalker’s Jedi under Master Yoda, Solo returns to the Rebel fleet and prepares to complete the battle with the Empire. During the subsequent fighting, Darth Vader captures the newly born Luke Skywalker.

10. Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015)

  • Cast: Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, and Harrison Ford.

Thirty years after the collapse of the Empire and Darth Vader, Ray, a scavenger from the planet Jakku, finds a BB-8 droid who knows where the long-lost Luke Skywalker is.

Furthermore, Ray, a Rebel stormtrooper, and two smugglers are drawn into a battle between the Resistance and the feared First Order corps.

11. Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017)

  • Cast: Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Mark Hamill.

Ray noted that Luke was isolated, but despite reluctant training in the Jedi, he had no desire to help the Resistance.

Cairo and Rei realize they are connected to the Force, and Rei approaches him and believes that some of them are still good.

Meanwhile, during a dramatic space battle, Vice Admiral Hold sacrifices himself to save the rest of the Resistance from escaping Krayt.

Cairo’s master, Supreme Leader Snoke, orders him to kill Rei. But when Rei flees, Cairo kills him and becomes Supreme Leader.

He then attacks the Resistance and is stopped by Luke, who appears at the end. Pair Battle and Luke are eventually killed, but Ray saves everyone else.

12. Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise Of Skywalker (2019)

  • Cast: Daisy Ridley, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac

Finally, on this list of Star Wars movies, Episode IX is in order so far. Here, Ray finishes training as a Jedi as the First Order devastates the galaxy.

But the ashes suddenly increase the danger when the evil Emperor Palpatine mysteriously returns from the dead.

Meanwhile, While working with Finn and Poe Dameron to fulfill a new mission, Ray not only confronts Kylo Ren again but also the truth about his parents and the destructive potential to determine his future and his fate.
