Who is Buhari?

He was born into a Fulani family on December 17, 1942, in a village called Daura in Katsina. His father was a Fulani Chieftain Hardo Adamu, and his mother Zulahiat.

Buhari was the twenty-third child of his father, but he didn’t get to enjoy that fatherly love, as death separated his father from him when he was four years old. Raised by his mother, he attended Daura and Mai’adua primary school in 1953. And he attended Katsina rural Secondary school from 1956 to 1961.

Buhari married his first wife in 1971 Safinatu (nee Yusuf). They had five children together, four girls and one boy. Their first daughter Zuliat was named after his mother (Zulai), Fatima, Musa(deceased son), Hadiza, and Safinatu.

Safinatu, the former first lady, died of diabetes. His first daughter Zuliat died from sickle cell anemia, two days after having a baby in Kaduna hospital.

Buhari divorced his first wife Safinatu in 1988 and married his current wife, Aisha Buhari, in 1989. They also have five children together with a boy and four girls: Aisha, Halima, Yusuf, Zahara, and Amina.

Military Career

At age 19, Buhari enrolled in the Nigerian Military Training college (NMTC) in 1962. The college was later renamed to the Nigerian Defense Academy after it was upgraded to an officer commissioning unit of the Nigerian Army.

When he turned 20, Buhari was commissioned a second platoon commander of the second infantry battalion in Abeokuta, Nigeria, and it was in January 1963. He attended the platoon commander course at the Nigerian Military training College, Kaduna.

Buhari played a major role in the events that shaped the country to what it is today. From civil war to military rule and now he Is the current president of the Republic of Nigeria.

During the civil war, Buhari was assigned to the 1st division under the command of Lt. Col Mohammed Shuwa, Buhari was briefly the 2nd battalion commander and led the battalion to Afikpo after they had captured Ogoja.

Buhari was posted to Nsukka before they advanced to Enugu; there, he became a brigade major of the 3rd infantry brigade under Joshua Gin. Buhari stayed there for a few months.

In 1968 he was posted to the Awka sector called the four sector which was charged to take over Onitsha from Division 2. It was in this sector that Buhari’s group faced heavy infantry and suffered a lot of casualties while trying to protect the supply of food routes.

After the war, Buhari became a Military secretary at the Army headquarters from 1978 to 1979, where he was a member of the Supreme military council. From1979 to 1980, when he was promoted to the rank of colonel, he attended the US Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and gained his master’s degree in Strategic Studies.

  • General Commanding Officer, 2nd mechanized infantry Division, January 1981 to October 1981
  • General Commanding Officer, 3rd Armed Division Nigerian Army, October 1981 to December 1983

Buhari ran for the office of president in 2003 as a candidate o ANPP but lost to the opposition party PDP incumbent, president Olusegun Obasanjo, by a margin of 11 million votes.

In 2007 he ran and lost again this time to a man from his home town Umaru Nusa Yaradua. After Umaru became the president, he called on the aggrieved ANPP to join its government with the appointment of its national chairman as cabinet members, but Buhari rejected the offer.

In 2010, Buhari joined a new party, which he helped to form (CPC) Congress of Progressive Change. He claims to create his new party due to the debilitating, ethical, and ideological conflicts in his former party.

He was the presidential candidate for CPC. on April 11, 2011, he ran for president and lost to Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP. He finally became the president of the country and was sworn in on May 29, 2015, after defeating the incumbent president Goodluck Jonathan.

In February 2019 Buhari defeated closest rival Atiku Abubakar and was re-elected as the president by over 3million votes and remains the 15th president of the Nigerian country

Net Worth

A document released by the presidency in 2015 states that he had less than 30 million in his account, and h had no foreign account. Within the report were also a total of houses owned by Buhari, a total of five homes, and two mud houses in Daura.

He has two homes in Kaduna, one in kano and Daura. He also has two undeveloped lands in Kano and Port Harcourt. Also, he has a farm, a ranch, and an orchard. On the farm, he has about 25 sheep, 270 cattle, and all kinds of birds and some economic tree.
Buhari is estimated to worth around $50 million to $80 million.
