John started showing interest in movies in the sixth grade during his school days when he played the role of Daddy Warbucks in a school drama.
One of the persons with who he attended school is BJ Novak who also starred with John on the Office. Both performed in dramas together since their school days and after that.
He graduated at the age of 20 years and spent a summer after graduation teaching the English language in Costa Rica.
John later went to university where he studied playwriting at the Brown University where he also graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in the English Language in the year 2001.
The same school in recognition of his achievement honored him with an honorary degree in the year 2019.

Real estate
In the year 2016 he together with the wife sold their Hollywood Hills to Kendal Jenner to the tune of $6.5 million.
They acquired a prewar townhouse located in Brooklyn and renovated them and later sold it at $6.5 in the year 2018.
The following year the couple purchased the entire Brooklyn condominium floor at the sum of $11million. They had a five-acre property in California which they sold for the sum of $2.4 million in 2017.
