3 Best Calorie Counting Apps for Android

You probably want to know the best calorie counter apps for Android to track everything you’re eating on your phone to ensure you hit your fitness and weight loss goals without paying for an app subscription. It can be challenging if you’re on a weight loss journey.

Thanks to technology, the solution is at your fingertips!  For those using Android devices, a suite of calorie counter apps is designed to demystify your daily intake. Thanks to Harvey’s study, it was confirmed that the best calorie-counting apps help weight loss even if you barely use them.

According to a new paper published in Obesity, you only need to spend 14.6 minutes daily monitoring your calorie intake to maintain a healthy weight. In this article, I’ll highlight the best calorie-counting apps. Not only that. I will also reveal why you might like it and why you might not like it to help you decide which of the best calorie counter apps for Android users will help you reach your weight loss goals.

1. MyPlate

My first best calorie counting app for Android users is MyPlate. I like the app’s look when you’re inside and in the food diary. I love that all your macros and calorie intake are right at the top, and I love that you can scroll down and give your breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack ideas, as well as the calorie range of each meal.

And I like how easy it is to track your water. There’s something cool to me about this picture that pops up, and you swipe on the glass to add your water intake. Many other apps are in the premium version, so this is in the free version of MyPlate, and it’s pretty cool to track your water intake.

Why I Like It:

  • It’s super easy to use. It’ll give you a simple breakdown of your proteins, your carbs, your fat, your calorie intake, your water intake, and the exercise that you can input.
  • It’s very simple to put your weight in regularly. I don’t recommend weighing yourself every day, but once in a while, get on the scale and track your progress. Very easy to track your food.
  • It has a barcode scanner for food items. This makes it super easy if you’re eating something like a protein bar or processed.
  • You can also create meals and create foods if it’s something that you eat regularly. Again, that makes it super easy to track.
  • If you like a community, they have a page where you can see what everybody else is up to. If you like being part of a community, say you don’t have an online coach like myself checking in on you constantly. If you want to see what everyone else is doing and help use that to motivate you, you can definitely check in on their online community.

What I Dislike:

One thing that I don’t like about this app is limited access to micronutrient tracking in the free version. You are not able to get all of your micronutrients, so you can see all your vitamins and minerals. That is part of the gold version.

That’s the first app I recommend to many people because of its simplicity, but again, it has a few things missing because it is still the free version.

2. Lose It

The second best calorie counter app for Android I recommend is Lose It. This is very similar to MyPlate. It is very visually appealing. I love that when you open the app, you see your calories, and I love how it says “calories under budget,” meaning I haven’t eaten enough today, and I need to eat more.

Why I Like It:

  • It’s very simple to switch it into macronutrients. I can see my pie chart there, how many grams of protein, carbs, how much fat I have eaten, and you can swipe right back. And it also will give you the entire week’s view, which is also very cool.
  • There are so many different ways to track. You can save foods, you can save meals, you can enter recipes. This is all in the free version.
  • I love the visual of the home page.
  • Very easy to use. I love how when you’re on the diary log. You can look at the top: your calorie budget, your food; you can enter your exercise, and you can toggle over and go right into your macronutrients.
  • It has a huge restaurant food database. You can find restaurant food. All restaurant foods are in this app.

What I Dislike:

  • You can’t see the protein, the carbs, the fats, the net carbs, and a lot of your micronutrients because you have to upgrade. And those are important.
  • It has no community feature (This is not a great deal, though).

So, if you want to learn about what you’re putting in your body, this is a great choice.

3. MyFitnessPal

I’m sure you’ve heard of it before, MyFitnessPal. This is among the best calorie counter apps for Android users you should choose to use to track your macros and calories. I’m just gonna preface this one by saying I have been using MyFitnessPal for the free version for many, many, many moons. I have never paid to use MyFitnessPal.

And I actually must say it’s my favorite. I’ll tell you why I really like MyFitnessPal.

Why I Like It:

  • As you use it, you start to remember the foods you want. For example, let’s take a look at lunch. I can add a list of all the foods I eat as I go. I can look at the macro split and add them as I go.
  • I love that it tells me my food’s high in protein. You can easily change your nutrition goal, how many calories you want to eat, and your proteins, carbs, and fat percentages. These are a lot of important micronutrients to ensure you are eating on track. When it comes down to nutrients, you can see the goal and the total.
  • You will get everything you need in the free version of this app, for sure.
  • It has recipes Integrated with fitness tracking. Give samples such as rice cakes with fruit if you want pre-workout ideas. It tells you the calorie intake. You can click on that. It’ll tell you the calorie breakdown and how to use it. They’re very easy. You can go through all of these ideas.
  • It has one of the biggest databases of foods.
  • You also can scan with their barcode, all part of the free version.

What I Dislike:

The one thing I would say is maybe the con is that the home screen doesn’t show a pie chart of macros.

Wrap Up

I’m not gonna lie. MyFitnessPal, with its comprehensive features even in the free version, is highly recommended and widely used by many looking for the best calorie counter apps for Android. If you want to dive in and make a lifestyle change, it might be worth looking into some of the premium versions of these apps. They will give you a lot more feedback on your daily food intake, your weight loss and weight loss goals, your exercise, and your entire lifestyle.

Here is the take. Only choose the app that aligns best with your specific needs and preferences, and don’t hesitate to explore their features to make an informed decision. Maintaining a calorie deficit, tracking macros, and being mindful of micronutrients can significantly contribute to your weight loss success.
