Sometimes, you want to kick back and watch some scary movies. Sometimes, though, that’s not an option if your television service only offers specific channels, and one of those channels happens to be Syfy.
However, even though the channel may be called Syfy, the channel airs quite a few monster movies that are worth watching!
There are so many Syfy monster movies right now that it would take forever to list them all! Thankfully, though, we’ve done just that in this article on the best Syfy monster movies to watch right now.
1. I Am Legend (2007)
Released in 200, it’s one of the best Syfy monster movies. I Am Legend follows the journey of Robert Neville, played by Will Smith.
Neville is the last living survivor in New York City. The latter fights a desperate battle against hordes infected with a rare genetic mutation that gives them increased intelligence and capacity for speech.
Will Smith is excellent as always and fits perfectly into this tale of isolation and desperation with his charismatic performance.
This movie isn’t always accurate in science, but it gives you plenty to think about while watching it. I Am Legend isn’t happy-go-lucky or fast-paced – it might not be your idea of escapism.
Instead, it forces you to contemplate what would happen if something like this were ever to happen in real life.
2. Camera Obscura (2017)
After reading the plot synopsis, he admitted that he was nervous about this movie, and it just seemed like a predictable and cliche creature from another world plot.
This movie proved him wrong and is one of the best Syfy monster movies. Not only was the creature not what he was expecting, but so much more interesting than any of my guesses!
This entire film is worth seeing for just how visually impressive it is at points. The way it blended art and horror without looking cheesy is pure genius, and when I think back on this film, plenty of scenes still stick with me long after I watched it.
3. Caved In: Prehistoric Terror (2006)
What’s more terrifying than going on a spelunking trip and coming face-to-face with an unknown creature in the dark? Caved In: Prehistoric Terror, one of the best Syfy monster movies, has these caving enthusiasts doing just that.
When they take an accidental detour, they find themselves stranded and hunted by an ancient, hungry predator in a haunting cave. If you enjoy modern pop-culture interpretations of creatures such as Jaws or Aliens, you’ll get a kick out of this one.
4. Pegasus Vs. Chimera (2012)
Pegasus Vs. Chimera, one of the best Syfy monster movies, follows a group of teens on a quest for the stolen jewel in the mythical Pegasus constellation.
They’re fighting an unkillable, demonic horse named Chimera who’s hellbent on being master of the Universe. This fast-paced film is packed with adventure and suspense, but it could have been more interesting if we saw how Pegasus was defeated at some point during the story!
5. Predator 2 (1990)
Based on the 1987 sci-fi horror movie Predator, but with some notable tweaks, this 1990 sequel picks up right where the original left off.
Dutch is killed, and Mayor Larry Vaughn (Lance Henriksen) has been appointed governor of a paradise, which is now enclosed by electrified fences and patrolled by armed guards.
When a group of men is slaughtered in a spot only Dutch knew about, he summons Major Alan Dutch Schaefer’s old team back together to figure out what’s going on before they’re all hunted down and killed.
The film, one of the best Syfy monster movies, was nominated for three Saturn Awards; Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Make-up.
6. You Might Be the Killer (2018)
Three college students look back on the events of their childhoods and how they may have led them to murder in the latest film by director Eli Roth.
The synopsis states, Twenty years ago, four kids ventured into the woods near their rural town for a simple camping trip, and they disappeared without a trace, leaving only one survivor found alive but traumatized.
Today the story finds him as an adult who has taken refuge from his past along with secrets that could finally bring the perpetrators of that long-ago crime to justice.
The protagonist (played by Justin Long) lives in an abandoned farmhouse with his wife and children when he’s confronted by three teens who escaped after one of their friends was murdered by her high school coach.
7. Piranhaconda (2012)
If you love cheesy monsters and science fiction, look no further than one of the best Syfy monster movies, Piranhaconda.
Filmed in Costa Rica with no budget, the film is gory and full of giant reptiles thanks to the iconic imagery accompanying crocodile attacks. Plus, have you ever heard of a monster called The Sewer Gator? Well, this is your chance!
A hybrid creature, half piranha and half anaconda, attack a low-budget horror movie crew on location near her nest when her egg is stolen by a greedy scientist who wants to sell it as good luck to superstitious locals.
8. Animal (2014)
One of the latest Syfy monster movies, Animal, stars Dwayne Johnson as a former military sergeant. He finds himself in the jungle fighting for his life alongside a misfit group of explorers.
The crew is searching for the lost city of Zinj, an urban center hidden deep within the African jungle. But they’re not the only ones on the hunt. A dangerous alpha predator lies in wait, with them as its prey.
Armed with technology and an attitude, Sgt. Brody turns this deep-sea mission into a shocking fight against one of humanity’s most formidable enemies: nature itself.
9. The Boy (2015)
An intimate portrait of a 9-year-old sociopath as he discovers his taste for killing. After a family tragedy, grieving couple Lauren and Michael Holt take in a boy they find sleeping in their yard one morning.
However, desperate for a fresh start, they welcome him into their home and get to work raising him like their own.
But as he reaches adolescence, it becomes clear that not all is right with Daniel and that their desperation may have blinded them to his dangerous nature.
10. The Monkey’s Paw (2013)
The Monkey’s Paw is a 2013 American horror film written and directed by Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman, and it’s one of the best Syfy monster movies.
The film stars Daniel Radcliffe, Pete Postlethwaite, Bailee Madison, Isabella Blake-Thomas, James Callis, and Dean Lennox Kelly.
This movie is based on the 1902 short story The Monkey’s Paw by W.W. Jacobs. In England in 1920, Arthur Smith (Radcliffe) and his wife Amy (Madison) use the monkey’s paw as a gift with premonitions that everything will go wrong.
11. Night of the Wild (2015)
A giant meteor crashes into a quiet town, and pet dogs become mysteriously aggressive. Attacking and killing the residents.
One of the best Syfy monster movies is based on my old horror story, Wild Night. In the original story, we never find out what caused the mysterious transformations in animals, but it will be fun for viewers to speculate about!
Night of the Wild featuring Rob Morrow and Kelly Rutherford opens with the narrator describing his late-night adventure of painting graffiti.
The graffiti depicts the events which happen later in the movie. One day after it rains, he notices people across town acting strange and fighting each other with knives.
His first thought is that they are drunk or high, so he walks over to them, but as he gets closer, he realizes they’re not drunk or high but something else entirely- they’re rabid like zombies!
Suddenly a little boy grabs him from behind and bites him before running away, yelling Night of the Wild! As soon as this happens, he’s hit by another person’s car, driving off with him stuck inside.
12. Siren (2016)
In 2016, it would seem that the only great thing going for horror movies was the thriller genre. Thankfully, this did not include the horror-thriller category, as John Krasinski’s Siren was one of its best examples of Syfy monster movies.
The film is set in a post-apocalyptic world after an underwater military experiment causes mass destruction and coastal disasters.
This film has all the components of a thrilling thrill, action, mystery, tension, and drama without relying on gratuitous gore or jump scares.
13. Deep in the Darkness (2014)
Based on the bestselling book series by Alyssa Rose Ivy, Deep in the Darkness follows a pack of brave teens who battle ancient creatures that dwell beneath their town.
The group fights monsters with biblical names like Ashlahak and Kohabit while they search for an original family they never knew they had.
Starring Charisma Carpenter as Aunt Sophie, this story is not only engaging but makes an important social message: Everyone deserves to know their roots.
However, upon release as one of the Syfy monster movies, Deep in the Darkness became an Amazon bestseller, thanks partly to two different authors, myself and Alyssa Rose Ivy, promoting it on Twitter. I’ve read both books and watched the movie; it’s pretty well done!
14. Ghost Voyage (2008)
Ghost Voyage (2008) is a comedic take on the cheesy Syfy monster movies of old, and it’s a surprisingly enjoyable ride.
The movie starts with overworked businessman Ian (Patrick Muldoon) taking his family on vacation when they get stranded at sea and encounter the ghost ship Atlantis. Before they know it, they’re being chased by all sorts of ghouls taken straight from Jules Verne’s novels.
Their journey takes them across the ocean floor in search of a treasure that could save their family business, but it’s not long before they find themselves up against an insane criminal mastermind.
This might sound like Jaws 2 or Killer Klowns From Outer Space, but Ghost Voyage manages to be funny without insulting your intelligence.
15. Basilisk: The Serpent King (2006)
Released in 2005, one of the best Syfy monster movies, Basilisk: The Serpent King, is the follow-up film for Toeju’s War, which was released a year earlier.
It tells the story of Mo Gongwon and his son In-haeng. While attempting to live up to their family’s expectations, they also deal with unfortunate circumstances.
They are constantly running into enemies like an imposing general named Lee Jeom-gyu and even attempting to protect their own country against Japanese invaders.
While they’re busy being heroes, Mo Gongwon learns that he might not be wholly human and that his past is much more intriguing than he had thought.
16. Silent Hill: Revelation (2012)
This sequel offers a more direct continuation of Silent Hill’s first movie. Since her mother’s disappearance, Rose’s daughter Sharon has been lost in the foggy town.
In this film, Rose encounters creatures and a ghostly figure that might be her daughter. Silent Hill: Revelation may not have much of an original plot (find family or escape from a haunted town), but it appeals to horror fans looking for spooky Halloween entertainment.
17. Beneath (2013)
Six high school students went for a day excursion and were attacked by a man eating a fish, the Great White Shark. It’s found out that this group of sharks is more intelligent than average, able to hunt in packs, and is killing humans.
As the movie progresses, the sharks are hungry because their food source has been depleted due to humans hunting them down.
They’re threatened when they find out a local fisherman has been feeding them baby seals, so they attack his boat and devour him.
This movie shows how an animal can be intelligent but also dangerous when it feels threatened or like its food source is being threatened.
18. House Of The Witch (2017)
Started on 7/2 and lasted until 7/5. Not sure when the second season started. This is a movie that’s very much like a Lifetime movie, with all the cheesy parts, the romanticization of abuse (it was triggering to watch at times), and the sudden twist ending you would expect from this type of thing.
So baffled they managed to get so many actors into it who usually have something better going on in their careers.
Some were currently guest-starring on a popular CW show or had just been in a Marvel movie, but we suppose that happens when you’re working for minuscule wages, and good costuming is hard to come by. Or maybe those actors just didn’t read the script before signing?
19. Jeepers Creepers III (2017)
After being so excited when they announced the release of a third Jeepers Creepers, I was bitterly disappointed with what I got.
It was much shorter than the first two, and I feel they used scenes from both as filler. Many changes didn’t make sense in the story, most noticeably not following the criteria for The Triad. No spoilers here, though.
This movie is better than something like Sharknado 5 but not nearly as good as the first two, in my opinion. Still worth watching if you’re a true fan of Jeepers Creepers because it provides some closure after all these years.
20. Friday The 13th (1980)
One of the best Syfy monster movies, Friday the 13th, is the film that started it all and made people rethink heading out into the woods alone.
You might not want to venture too far out of your comfort zone because this story follows a group of counselors and friends tasked with staying at Camp Crystal Lake for the summer.
Unlike other films on this list, Jason Voorhees is present on Friday the 13th as campers spend their days having fun and doing as they please. One by one, they’re killed off by a mysterious force lurking in the shadows.
That’s only natural given that Jason is stalking them from just about every angle he can find – up trees, down paths near lakesides – there’s no way to stay safe when he’s around.
21. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
This is one of the best Syfy monster movies, and it’s about a kid who cannot be killed and murdered. His dreams are now 36 years old and still as relevant as ever.
Who would’ve thought Freddy Krueger, the angsty vengeful child from our nightmares, would become one of the most recognizable horror icons?
In fact, for many people, this movie comes before A Christmas Carol. It is evident how famous Freddy has been in the past three decades when you see the number of remakes (including one titled New Nightmare), spinoffs, parody films, and an animated TV series that have all capitalized on his name.
22. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
As far as iconic Syfy monster movies go, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) is pretty damn hard to beat. Released in 1974 and directed by Tobe Hooper, the film follows a group of friends on their way to an old homestead in the middle of rural Texas when they are forced off the road by a crazed man in a large truck.
The driver, who never introduces himself or is identified throughout the movie, confronts them with a shotgun and forces them into his family home, where he immediately begins verbally abusing them with misogynistic slurs before revealing that he has just killed his entire family – including his parents. He then starts flaying pieces from one of his deceased relatives’ limbs and eating them raw.
23. Friday The 13th Part 2 (1981)
Friday the 13th Part 2 picks up right where the first one left off and even nods to the ending of Friday the 13th. The main character, Alice, runs away from home because she feels abandoned by her mother.
We learn that her stepfather sexually assaulted her after he caught her wearing his clothes and perfume.
Meanwhile, Jason and his mother, Mrs. Voorhees, start searching for Alice to kill her in revenge for killing Mrs. Voorhees’ son, Jason (the first movie’s killer).
Alice meets up with Jeff (Chris), who takes care of her until he’s found out by his dad and kicked out of the house. Mr.
24. Saw II (2005)
In this dark sequel, Zayas becomes an accomplice to Jigsaw and is made the Tooth Fairy Killer. This time, all the victims have something in common – they all lack the dental work needed for a specific profile.
Ultimately, police have no leads on the identity of either killer. To catch him, Det and Mike Tapp begin suspecting Anthony’s obsession with puppets and dolls as a motive for killing children. As far as it goes in this suspenseful movie, you’ll have to watch and find out!
25. A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)
We’re suckers for anything, Freddy Krueger. A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master is the fifth installment and arguably the best of the Syfy monster movies, with five films in the franchise.
We still admire it even if it doesn’t make our top pick. It shows off what makes the original a classic: a sense of humor, excellent cinematography, clever storytelling, and tons of blood-curdling terror.
Also, there are some nice nods to Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, which came out four years later and dealt with actor Robert Englund playing Freddy Krueger outside of an actual film. Plus, you get Lori Petty from Tank Girl!
26. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Night of the Living Dead is a film by George A. Romero. It’s a horror classic that set many tropes in the zombie genre, including social commentary and slow-moving zombies who seem hellbent on eating humans alive (although not always successfully).
It was filmed in black and white and is set on an isolated farmhouse as survivors barricade themselves inside. However, they soon discover there are creatures outside too.
27. A Quiet Place Part II (2021)
If you’re a sucker for a good horror movie and are also in the mood for some creature feature mayhem, go no further.
The sequel to A Quiet Place Part I is now out and ready for your viewing pleasure. This time, we find ourselves in another equally dangerous and terrifying world.
And if you loved what John Krasinski did with his previous film, then it’s safe to say that this one will not disappoint. It’s one of the best Syfy monster movies around.
28. Shadows of the Dead (2016)
What makes a movie scary? When something doesn’t go right. Shadows of the Dead is about a truck driver and his niece driving through Wisconsin, where an earthquake has hit.
The driver is transporting bodies to medical facilities but stops when he hits someone on the road.
So, he discovers that he’s collided with a zombie and must take care of it before it infects any other humans in the town. Will this zombie nightmare ever end? You’ll have to watch and find out for yourself in one of the classic Syfy monster movies.
29. Dead 7 (2016)
Dead 7 is an action-packed zombie western that feels like a Quentin Tarantino movie. The idea is creative, and the CGI special effects are stunning. Still, it’s not without its flaws.
The first quarter of the film drags as it tries to set up all the characters, and some confusing flashbacks in the second half make it difficult to follow.
But when Dead 7 focuses on gunslinging cowboy mayhem and zombie shootouts, it’s easy to get sucked into this unique cinematic experience.
30. A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985)
A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge is a 1985 film directed by Jack Sholder. The film is the second installment in the Nightmare on Elm Street series and stars Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. And it’s one of the best Syfy monster movies.
Released on May 1, 1985, it grossed $25 million at the North American box office and has been hailed as one of the most influential slasher films ever made.
However, it was met with mixed reviews, but it did make it onto Roger Ebert’s Top Ten List for 1985. He praised its excellent plot and felt that more than enough blood was being spilled to satisfy horror movie fans.
31. Friday The 13th Part Vi: Jason Lives (1986)
In this sixth installment of the Friday the 13th series, Jason has been destroyed by being blown up at the end of part five. He wakes up in a morgue, revived by electricity and undead again.
He leaves the morgue and kills the town’s people one by one. Alice is an only child who knows that Jason can’t harm her because she believes she can’t die.
32. Locusts: The 8th Plague (2005)
In the year 945, locusts began terrorizing China. Locusts were a significant problem because they destroyed crops, soil, and trees by eating everything in their path. They were also carriers of diseases, like the Black Death.
One government official who had managed to survive the plague proposed an exciting solution: turn ordinary people into living dead zombies that couldn’t get infected with locusts because they didn’t have a beating heart.
But as soon as one was attacked, they would die and become a regular corpse, which meant more food for the locusts. It’s best not to know what happened after that since there is no film footage.
33. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)
In 2003, the creators of the House of Wax remake set out to make a prequel of sorts. Bruce Fitzpatrick and Scott Kosar teamed up for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. The story follows a group of teenagers encountering the Hewitt family in Texas on their road trip.
Rather than relying on gore, the film focuses more on psychological terror than anything else. By positioning it as the right way to see Leatherface’s backstory (which helps soften any disappointment from the other films), director Jonathan Liebesman does justice to Hooper’s classic horror film.
34. Dementia 13 (2017)
Dementia 13 is a 2017 horror film and one of the best Syfy monster movies that follow a grieving family on the verge of losing their land.
The family falls victim to the evil matriarch, Adele, played by Dee Wallace Stone. This film is a remake of a 1964 movie of the same name and contains some of the best scares I’ve seen in a while. I highly recommend checking out this spooky good flick.
35. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors is the third installment in the series and follows Kristen, who tries to rebuild her life after her terrifying encounter with Freddy Krueger.
She starts working at a psychiatric hospital, taking care of kids who have been affected by nightmares. Freddy figures out that all share one common trait – all young people with ESP (Extra Sensory Perception).
The film follows how Kristen leads these teens into a battle against Freddy and saves their lives. This movie is filled with suspenseful twists and turns as you wonder how long until their luck runs out.
36. Aladdin And The Death Lamp (2012)
It’s the classic Aladdin story, but with a twist: instead of a genie, there’s a mysterious lamp. And not only do you get three wishes granted when you rub it but one wish grants that one special wish of their very own.
But the lamp has evil powers, and the ills always outweigh the positives unless you know who to trust.
