Anthony, although of a Nigerian-Irish origin, is a British by birth. He was born in 15th October 1989 in Watford, Hertfordshire.
However, most of AJ developmental years were in Nigeria, undergoing his secondary education in Lagos State. Unfortunately for him, his parents Yeta and Robert Joshua got divorced when he was 12.

In 2007, AJ started off as a bricklayer before being convinced by his cousin to venture into boxing. Anthony Joshua was able to join a boxing club known as the Finchley ABC in Barnet located at North London.
This boxing club also produced another professional boxer known as Derek Chisora. Two years after joining this club he won Haringey Box Cup two times, one in 2009 and another in 2010.
In the 2010, Joshua won the senior ABA Championships. It was later revealed to the public that AJ turned down a £50,000 to turn professional. He expressed that the reasons he did so was that he is into boxing for medals not for money.
In 2010, Joshua became a British amateur champion at the GB Championships after knocking out Amin Isa. In 2011 during the European Championships, Anthony Joshua knocked out Eric Berechlin and Cathal McMonagle. However, he was knocked out by Mihai Nistor a Romanian southpaw.
AJ also completed in the 2011 World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. This was Anthony’s long needed opportunity which he took advantage of, as he knocked out an Italian reigning world and Olympic champion Roberto Cammarelle.
After defeating Reberto he proceeded to fight Erik Pfeifer of Germany in the semi-finals which he unfortunately lost to a to local boxer Magomedrasul Majidov by a single point. Although he lost to Majidov, he still got a silver medal.
In 2012, Joshua took part in the 2012 London Olympics and also took part in the 2012 Olympic Games in the super-heavyweight division.
During the Olympics games Joshua knocked out Erislandy Savón (Cuba) with 17-16, he also did the same to Zhang Zhilei (China) 15:11, Ivan Dychko (Kazakhstan) 13-11 and Roberto Cammarelle (Italy).
