Akira Hiramoto is the author and illustrator of the Japanese manga series Prison School.
A 12-episode anime TV show based on the manga was directed by Tsutomu Mizushima and aired from July to September 2015.
In this post, we will discuss 10 anime like Prison School. Prison School is an ecchi-comedy anime that follows a group of male students.
These male students are forced to attend an all-female boarding school owing to policy changes.
The boys, however, are incarcerated in the school’s jail as a result of their conduct. Despite the anime being abruptly canceled, some critics think that Prison School is a great watch.
It is said to be among the best comedic anime to have been shown in the previous five years. There’s no doubt that the crude, adult-like humor on the TV show Prison School makes it stand out.
1. Shimoneta (2015)
In the manga and anime series Shimoneta, a young man named Tanukichi Okuma enrolls in an infamous high school.
Tanukichi Okuma enrolled at the school in order to pursue his childhood crush. He also planned to back the student council’s efforts to keep Japan’s laws against violence.
However, things change when Okuma joins Blue Snow’s organization, SOX, a group accused of obscene crimes.
Okuma got dragged into the organization because of his unusual history. The anime follows Tanukichi as he assists SOX in attacking the person he cares about.
Shimoneta features a male protagonist who must act provocatively against many people. The anime has the same kind of ecchi humor and is set in a place that looks like a school. It is a classic example of an anime like Prison School.
2. Grand Blue (2018)
The anime “Grand Blue,” just like Prison School, also centers on a group of guy friends. The anime follows Iori Kitahara, a first-year mechanical engineering student at Izu University.
Kitahara lives above his uncle’s scuba diving business on the Izu Peninsula’s coast. However, when Kitahara meets hard-partying diving club members, he falls in love with their antics.
While he was getting along with the diving club members, many people were forced to abandon him in the process.
Now, Iori must confront himself and determine what his true college dream is. Grand Blue is a good example of an anime like Prison School.
It features male characters that are deeply attracted to women and engage in actions that are more appropriate for adults.
Prison School is mostly about a boarding school-like environment, while Grand Blue is mostly about college life.
3. Kakegurui (2017 – 2019)
The anime series Kakegurui is based on manga of the same name. In the anime, a girl named Jabami Yumeko enrolls in a school where gambling is common.
On the other hand, Yumeko is a gambling addict, which is something that none of the other students know.
The anime is mostly about Yumeko’s efforts to get rid of Kirari, the president of her school’s student council.
Kakegurui features odd animation sequences and self-aware humor similar to Prison School. It is a classic example of an anime like Prison School.
The anime version of Kakegurui wasn’t as good as it could have been because the source material wasn’t fully adapted.
Kakegurui shouldn’t disappoint, though, if you liked Prison School’s bawdy humor and bizarre setting.
4. Cromartie High School (2003)
Cromartie High School is a strange high school comedy manga and anime series. It is set in a school full of Japan’s “worst” delinquents.
Takashi Kamiyama and his eccentric friends at Cromartie High School, are the focus of the story.
Kamiyama is seen sending in a few punny jokes and making plans to become popular among the bad kids.
The series is a spoof of 1970s and 1980s Japanese “yankii” (juvenile delinquent) manga. The art style is similar to that of Ryoichi Ikegami’s Otoko zora and Otoko-gumi.
Cromartie High School is a good example of an anime, like Prison School. The two anime are high school comedies about a gang of adolescent boys’ misadventures.
Prison School’s humor is more centered on gross-out humor, but Cromartie’s comedy is more varied, even weird at times.
5. Golden Boy (1995)
Golden Boy revolves around a man named Kintarou Ooe who is looking for the perfect job. Kintarou hopes that his love of women and his desire to learn will lead him to a wonderful life.
The anime, just like Prison School, concentrates on provocative humor. Golden Boy also makes sure that the women in their shows have their own personalities and stand out.
In both shows, the male characters’ basic understanding of women is emphasized, and each episode shows how they get better at understanding women.
The anime is claimed to be one of those anime that many fans missed and should watch.
6. Great Teacher Onizuka (1999 – 2000)
The plot revolves around Eikichi Onizuka, a 22-year-old ex-bōsōzoku member who works as a teacher at a private middle school.
Eikichi Onizuka aspires to be Japan’s top high school teacher. However, when Onizuka encounters his new students, he realizes he’s in for a surprise.
Unknown to his new students, Onizuka isn’t just any ordinary instructor worth hurting. After seeing how much power a teacher has over women, he decides to become a teacher. He does, however, acquire his teaching degree from a second-rate college.
The example is a great example of an anime like Prison School, which includes perverted individuals in a school context.
Thus, fans of comedy anime may like Great Teacher Onizuka’s bold quips. Some also claim that it is an anime that only needed one season to tell its engaging story.
7. Gintama (2006 – 2021)
Gintama is known for being one of the funniest anime series of all time. It also has a lot of dramatic action scenes that fans of more classic battle anime will enjoy.
The story is about a man named Gintoki Sakata who shows no shame in displaying his love for samurai.
Meanwhile, in his society, samurais are treated poorly, and swords are forbidden. As Gintoki works as a yorozuya, he will eventually meet new people who want to go on his adventures with him.
Thus, the anime follows Gintoki and his buddies on their many humorous journeys. Their journeys are frequently thwarted by several independents, assassins, and law enforcement.
This is another great choice for an anime like Prison School. It features an engaging plot line with mature humor done in an unconventional manner.
8. Nanbaka (2016 – 2017)
The plot is centered on four young men who are assigned to Nanba Prison. In the anime, Nanba Prison is known as the toughest jail in the whole world.
Rock, who enjoys eating and fighting, Uno, an obsessive gambler, Nico, a former drug addict, and Jyugo.
The action depicts the inmates’ and guards’ daily routines at the prison. Nanbaka is a great TV show with hilarious scenes and great character development on every screen. Definitely one of the best anime like Prison School on our list.
Both Prison School and Nanbaka take place in “prisons” of some kind, with the common subject of escape. Both shows also feature younger children who have gotten themselves into trouble and are now in prison.
9. Punch Line (2015)
Punch Line is about a young boy named Yuuta Iridatsu. Yuuta has his soul taken by a supernatural cat named Chiranosuke. That’s not all Yuuta discovers; after looking at a woman’s underwear, he gains great power.
So, the anime shows Yuuta and his friends as they try to stop a group that wants to destroy the world. Yuuta is also being cautioned against seeing more underpants, which could lead to the end of their world.
Punch Line, like Prison School, has sexual humor that may make some anime lovers laugh. Both are extremely animated and will delight some anime fans after watching. Punch Line is a good example of an anime like Prison School.
10. Detroit Metal City (2008)
The storyline of Detroit Metal City revolves around a man named Souichi Negishi. Negishi is a timid young musician who aspires to be a pop star.
He ended up as the lead singer and guitarist for a blackened death metal band because of his financial status.
Also, this anime shows how hard it is for Negishi to balance his fame with normal college life. Detroit Metal City, like Prison School, has adult-like comedy and crude imagery that may not be appropriate for young audiences.
Both anime feature protagonists who want a quiet life. Especially with a woman who is more on the average side of the spectrum than on the reckless side. It is a good example of an anime like Prison School.
