2015 was an excellent year for movies, and we saw some incredible, jaw-dropping movies come out.
We will share 2015 top-grossing movies in this article. If you’ve ever wondered what the top-grossing movies from 2015 are, you will love this article.
Moviegoers in the US saw record revenues of almost $11 billion in 2015, which is something to be excited about because movie earnings have often been a great predictor of favorite, successful, and popular movies.
It didn’t disappoint this year. Without further ado, I present the list of the top-grossing movies in 2015.
1. Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens
- Worldwide Gross: $2.068B
First, on our list of the top-grossing movies of 2015, we have Star Wars -The Force Awakening. This movie has an impressive record of being the highest-grossing opening weekend in 2015 to date and the fastest release to gross $1 billion worldwide in 12 days.
According to Box Office, its highest-grossing records came from the United States and Canada, garnering over $2.068 billion worldwide.
Some of the perceived reasons for its worldwide appeal are the plot’s incorporation of many elements, including chaos, comedy, power struggles, a consistent storyline, and spirituality, which many people find relatable.
The Movie won 37 awards and received 95 nominations, and according to the Saturn Awards, it was their most nominated movie after receiving thirteen nominations.
It had an excellent cast, including Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher.
2. Jurassic World
- Worldwide Gross: $1.6B
The Next 2015 top-grossing movie on our list is Jurassic World. It is obviously a personal fave with figures to back it up.
It’s the second highest-grossing movie of 2015 and the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time after an opening weekend figure of $524.4 million and grossing $1.6 billion worldwide. Its highest records came from North America and Countries outside America.
The movie’s success is attributed to its already existing franchise, with Jurassic Park games and the like already in existence after the first movie’s release in 1993, the presence of Chris Pratt, who starred in Guardians of the Galaxy, which was a blockbuster in its own right, and not excluding the increasing craze for horrific killings on screen.
Winning 15 awards and gaining 58 nominations. Star Cast: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas, Ty Simpkins, Judy Greer, Irrfan Khan, Vincent D’Onofrio, Nick Robinson, Jake Johnson, Katie McGrath.
3. Furious 7
- Worldwide Gross: $1.5B
Furious 7, shortened from Fast and Furious 7, comes third among the top-grossing movies in 2015.
It is said to be one of the most expensive movies ever made, costing $250 million. In its opening week, it grossed $397.6 million and over $1.5 billion globally.
Furious 7 and other fast-and-furious movies’ existing franchises received credit for their success at the box office, the family “feel” portrayed in the films, and the love stories because everybody loves a good love story, stunts, fast cars, and all.
It won 8 awards out of 24 nominations. Star Cast: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jason Statham, Jordana Brewster, Djimon Hounsou, and Kurt Russell.
4. Avengers: Age of Ultron
- Worldwide Gross: $1.4B
Avengers: Age of Ultron is said to be the second most expensive movie made based on its production cost of $365 million.
It grossed $191 million in its opening weekend and approximately $1.4 billion globally, ranking fourth among the top-grossing 2015 movies.
While considering why this Avengers series performed so well at the box office, although the first one performed relatively better, we’ll attribute it to the love many people have for superhero movies with a lot of butt-kicking, rescues, and senseless love affairs.
It gained four awards out of 31 nominations. Star Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Buffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Hayley Atwell, Idris Elba, Stellan Skarsgard, James Spader, and Samuel L. Jackson.
5. Minions
- Worldwide Gross: $1.159B
The movie pulled in $115 million globally in its opening weekend and $1.159 billion worldwide, subsequently earning it the fifth spot among 2015’s top-grossing movies and the highest-grossing animated film to date.
The heavy bag dropped for its promo is one of the reasons for the success Minions enjoyed and the general appeal to kids because of their bumbling and incoherent speeches, mischief, and sheer cuteness.
Some even believe incorporating other Disney characters into its merchandise contributed to its increased earnings.
It was also nominated for eleven different awards, and it won four of them. The cast includes Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan, Jennifer Saunders, and Pierre Coffin.
6. Spectre
- Worldwide Gross: $880.6M
After grossing $70.4 million in its opening week and over $880.6 million worldwide, Spectre became the sixth top-grossing movie in 2015.
It was projected to have more extensive records, but that wasn’t exactly the case. Although it was not a flop, a more consistent storyline could have pulled in more excellent records.
Fans were a tad disappointed in the overall plot, the sorry excuse for a villain portrayed by Spectre, and the sheer lack of good action to commemorate the movie’s length.
It won 7 awards out of 50 nominations and has a Guinness record for the “Largest film stunt explosion.” The cast includes Daniel Craig, John Logan, Neal Purvis, and Robert Wade.
7. Inside Out
- Worldwide Gross: $858.8M
After grossing $858.8 million globally and $91.1 million during its opening weekend, with a budget of $175 million, Inside Out secured its position as the seventh-highest-grossing movie of 2015.
With a storyline that incorporates many easily relatable emotions, the appeal and resulting box office success are easy to understand.
It won 56 awards out of 114 nominations, one of which is an Academy Award. Star Cast: Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Mindy Kaling, Richard Kind, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Kaitlyn Dias, Diane Lane, and Kyle Maclachlan did the voiceovers for the characters.
8. Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation
- Worldwide Gross: $688.8M
According to box office records, next on our list is the eighth 2015 top-grossing movie; we have Mission Impossible, with an opening weekend figure of $55.5 million and grossing $688.8 million worldwide.
Its existing franchise played a significant role in its success, and watching Tom Cruise do live stunts makes it more entertaining and a sure blockbuster.
It bagged six awards out of 26 awards. Starring: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Right, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Alec Baldwin, Sean Harris, Simon McBurney, and Tom Hollander.
9. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay
- Worldwide Gross: $658M
The Hunger Games occupies the ninth position on our list of 2015’s top-grossing movies is Hunger Games 2.
With a budget of $160 million, Hunger Games 2 grossed $102 million in its opening weekend, which is also the lowest opening weekend figure of the trilogy. It raked in over $658 million globally.
Mocking Jay was a global hit because there were already fans of the book before the movie adaptation. Jennifer Lawrence’s ability to carry the role can also account for its success.
It landed five awards out of 17 different nominations. Star Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Donald Sutherland.
10. The Martian
- Worldwide Gross: $630M
The Martian is last on our list of 2015 top-grossing movies. It pulled in $55 million in its opening weekend and grossed over $630 million worldwide, with a budget of $108 million.
We have Matt Damon to thank for the success of this hit gracing our screens, with screenwriter Drew Goddard affirming that if Matt had declined to take up the role, the movie would probably never have been released.
It won 25 awards out of 141 nominations and was named Movie of the Year by the National Board of Review.
Star Cast: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Mackenzie Davis, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Naomi Scott, and Kristen Wiig.
2015 was a big year for movies, big enough to break multiple box office records. Plenty of hype leads into this new year; what will it hold next?
If history repeats itself, we can expect near-record-breaking releases once again—at least until Hollywood runs out of new book series to adapt.
Several new trends are arising in the movie industry. More and more 3D movies are making it to the big screen, movie-goers are flocking to theaters to see animated films on the big screen, and movies about space remain a popular choice for 2015.
The trends will likely continue into 2016, and we can only speculate about what else will enter big-budget filmmaking in the future. It will be interesting to see how things change over time.
