Whether you’re an avid sci-fi fan or someone looking for their first experience in the genre, there’s no shortage of great movies to choose from here at Hulu.

Sci-fi Movies on Hulu

1. Arrival (2016)

Arrival is a 2016 American science fiction drama film directed by Denis Villeneuve. It has  Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg,  Tzi Ma, and Amy Adams as notable cast.

This is the plot of “Arrival”: Amy Adams plays Louise Banks, a linguist. She’s recruited to communicate with aliens who have landed on Earth in twelve identical spaceships, and no one knows why they’ve come or their intentions.

The ships hover motionless about fifty yards above the ground. They’re giant saucers, about a hundred yards in diameter and a hundred yards thick.

Louise is flown to one of them, where she meets Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner), who leads the military team guarding the ship.

He explains that they don’t know how the alien ship works—it’s just there. Arrival is one of the exciting Sci-fi movies on Hulu that will keep you entertained, especially after a hard day’s job.

2. The Host (2013)

The Host film follows Melanie Stryder (played by Saoirse Ronan), one of the few humans left on Earth fighting for survival.

Melanie is kidnapped, and they try to convert her into a form of the parasite that, in most cases, takes over the human host where the creature inhabits.

The Host is a science fiction horror film adapted by director Andrew Niccol. It was released in 2013 and was based on the same name written by Stephanie Meyer.

The film starred Saoirse Ronan and Max Irons and was produced by Andrew Niccol and Bayona.

If you are looking for a Sci-fi movie on Hulu that will keep you on edge, consider The Host.

3. Possessor (2020)

The Possessor is a 2020 science fiction psychological horror film written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg, starring  Andrea Riseborough and Christopher Abbott, with Rossif Sutherland, Tuppence Middleton, Sean Bean, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

The Possessor revolves around an assassin named Tasya Vos, who has the power to possess other people’s bodies to carry out her heinous acts.

Tasya Vos does this by implanting an unwitting host’s brain with a particular machine she uses to insert her consciousness into her victim’s minds. After carrying out her hits, she returns to her body after causing her victims to commit suicide.

This is another Sci-fi movie on Hulu that you can enjoy watching with your family.

4. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

Another Sci-fi movie on Hulu, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, is perhaps the greatest of all the Star Trek movies. I’m sure it’s the best movie about time travel ever made.

The story: The Enterprise crew is enjoying shore leave on a planet when a mysterious force invades, and Spock’s life is threatened. Spock was born in this timeline, but Kirk has never met him, making for an interesting dynamic.

It stars William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, and Walter. Nicholas Meyer directed the movie.

5. Melancholia (2011)

The story is about a newlywed couple before they were married, Justine and Michael, who will have their wedding on Mars.

The bride’s sister, Claire, comes in the middle of their wedding preparation because she ran away from her husband, John, who was having an affair with Justine’s mother.

Claire decides to stay part of the wedding party, but her presence bothers Justine, who finds it hard to communicate with her sister because they always had some conflict growing up.

Melancholia was directed by Lars von and starred Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Alexander Skarsgard.

6. Colossal (2017)

Colossal is another Sci-fi movie on Hulu that can create suspense. Its plot is hard to describe, which is one of the reasons I like it so much.

The story follows Gloria (Anne Hathaway), an unemployed young woman who moves back to her hometown, and she finds a boyfriend there and starts to live everyday life.

But things get weird when she realizes she has some connection to a giant monster destroying Seoul every time she sneezes.

The beast looks like Godzilla, but maybe bigger or smaller—that’s hard to tell since the movie doesn’t show much of it on screen.

The movie is not just about Gloria’s relationship with the monster, though; it also focuses on Gloria’s relationship with Oscar (Jason Sudeikis).

Their dynamic is interesting because they both have secrets they can’t share.

The movie starred Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikis, Dan Stevens, Tim Blake Nelson, and Austin Stowell. Nacho Vigalondo directed it.

7. Sputnik (2020)

In 1983, during the last hot period of the Cold War, two Russian cosmonauts involved in an orbital exploration mission experienced something unfathomable on their return to Earth: They saw something move outside their ship.

The spacecraft failed on reentry and crashed in Kazakhstan, and only one of the cosmonauts, Constantine, emerged unscathed.

He is taken to a remote military facility, where Colonel Semiradov, the officer in charge, recruits Dr. Tatyana Klimova, a young psychiatrist under investigation for her controversial approaches.

Egor Abramenko directed Sputnik, which starred Oksana Akinshina and Fyodor Bondarchuk.

8. Dredd (2012)

Directed by Pete Travis, starring Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Wood Harris, and Lena Headey, Dredd Dredd is a 2012 science fiction action film based on Judge Dredd’s 2000 AD comic strip.

Karl Urban stars as Judge Dredd, a law enforcer given the power of judge, jury, and executioner in a vast, dystopic metropolis called Mega-City One that lies in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

It has been ten years since I saw this movie after it appeared in theatres. My initial reaction was, “It’s good but not great.” Watching it again today, my opinion has changed. It’s still a great film. The story is not particularly original but well-told and visually stunning.

The action scenes are what you expect from a futuristic sci-fi film, but there are plenty of them (some better than others).

No gimmicks or special effects stand out, just solid storytelling with an excellent cast and beautiful cinematography.

You should watch this movie if you enjoy science fiction or action films, and Dredd is one of the best films I’ve seen recently.

9. Fire in the Sky (1993)

In 1975, an ensemble of five men drove home after working in the woods when they saw a strange light. Fascinated, Travis Walton (D.B. Sweeney) leaves the truck – only to be sucked up by a flying saucer.

The other four men report the strange incident but are stopped by Lt. Frank Watters (James Garner), questioned skeptically, who suspects that Walton’s disappearance was due to murder.

When Walton reappears five days later, his story about the alien abduction is met with disbelief.

Robert Lieberman directed Fire in the Sky, which starred D. B. Sweeney, Robert Patrick, Craig Sheffer, Peter Berg, and James Garner.

10. Minority Report (2002)

Based on a story by the famous science fiction author Philip K. Dick, “Minority Report” is an action detective thriller set in Washington, D.C., in 2054.

It takes place where the police use psychological technology to arrest and convict murderers before they commit their crimes.

Tom Cruise plays the head of this pre-crime unit and is himself accused of the future murder of a man he has not even met.

The movie starred Colin Farrell and Tom Cruise. Steven Spielberg directed it.

11. Westworld (1973)

Westworld is a futuristic theme park where paying guests can pretend to be gunslingers in an artificial Wild West inhabited by androids.

After paying a sizable entrance fee, Blane (James Brolin) and Martin (Richard Benjamin) are determined to relax by hitting the saloons and firing their guns.

But when the system goes bonkers, and Blane is murdered in a duel with a robot gunslinger (Yul Brynner), Martin’s escape fantasy suddenly turns into a gloomy reality.

Directed by Michael Crichton, Westworld starred Richard Benjamin and Yul Brynner.

12. Forbidden Planet (1956)

Forbidden Planet is one of the most influential science-fiction films ever made. It has had a significant influence on the Star Trek franchise, and it was nominated for an Oscar and won a Hugo Award in 1957.

The plot is standard sci-fi stuff. A crew of space travelers lands on a planet they know nothing about and finds that survivors from an earlier expedition are hiding a dangerous secret. There’s also a robot and a cute girl.

The special effects are great for their time. The audience sees what the characters see from their point of view, and we get to see how unfamiliar landscapes look to different people.

It becomes clear why directors like Joss Whedon often use this format for the first shot in their movies. The sound effects are also excellent; later movies have mostly copied them.

The story is quite dark and pessimistic. It shows how difficult it is to live in a world where everything you think you know is wrong and everybody else around you has turned evil or insane. The only good guy is the robot, who has been programmed to be good.

Fred M. Wilcox directed Forbidden Planet, and it starred  Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, and Leslie Nielsen.

So maybe you’re a science fiction and fantasy fan, and you’re looking for something to watch. Or perhaps you are just bored, needing a creative boost, and interested in seeing some high-quality films from the genre.

Whatever your reason for coming here, we hope this list of sci-fi movies on Hulu has met your needs.
