Although The Simpsons are one of the greatest television shows, not every Simpsons video game are based on the Fox sitcom has been as successful.
It’s hard to believe that The Simpsons family first aired as short animations on a variety show named The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987, more than 30 years ago.
In addition, the one-minute cartoons aired until May 1989, after which The Simpsons became a full-fledged independent series in December 1989, with a Christmas special titled “Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire.”
The series has become a global phenomenon and one of the longest-running scripted primetime television shows in the United States since its premiere in the first season.
However, the series is in its 28th season at the time of writing, and there have been numerous Christmas and Halloween specials, a movie, and, of course, video games over the years.
The Simpsons video game franchise debuted in 1991 on the home console and has since expanded to include arcades, handhelds, mobile devices, and even the current generation of consoles such as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Many of the games were standard licensed cash-ins, but there were a few natural treasures. Well, some of the best Simpsons video games are:
1. The Simpsons: Hit & Run
Platforms: Xbox, PlayStation, GameCube, Microsoft Windows.
The Simpsons: Hit & Run is ideal for parents who are adamant about their children not playing open-world games like Grand Theft Auto.
Hit & Run has all of the fun and enjoyment of the GTA series from the PlayStation 2 era, but without the violence or colorful language.
However, it also helps that Hit & Run is one of the greatest Simpsons games ever made, improving the GTA formula in many ways with instant mission restarts.
It is also a superior guiding system that provides a more user-friendly interface that both young and old players will appreciate.
2. The Simpsons: Tapped Out
Platforms: PC
The Simpsons: tapped out is also one of the best Simpsons video games of all time. Homer Simpson begins the game by playing a farm game on his iPad and spending $1000 on berries.
Meanwhile, red lights are flashing, but Homer is unconcerned. Then there’s a fire in the background. Just before Springfield erupts, he looks up from his myPad and murmurs, “Uh Oh.”
Then he wakes up in Springfield, which is virtually deserted. However, he subsequently constructs the Simpson house, causing Lisa Simpson to appear.
After that, they discussed what transpired. Professor Frink then informs Homer and Lisa that the explosion enabled them to travel to other Springfields.
Then Homer and Lisa return to Springfield and begin cleaning up the mess.
3. The Simpsons Arcade
Platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3
Smithers, who had stolen a diamond from a Jewel Shop for Mr. Burns, unintentionally stumbles into Homer while going down the street with the Simpsons.
Additionally, the diamond is launched into the air and lands in Maggie’s mouth. Smithers kidnaps Maggie and flees with the diamond in her mouth, causing the Simpsons to track him out and save her.
However, they are forced to fight men hired by Mr. Burns to prevent the family from getting Maggie back on the way.
They chase Smithers into Krustyland, where they are ambushed by Clowns and bunnies (from Matt Groening’s original cartoon Life in Hell) after overcoming several thugs, including a wrestler.
4. The Simpsons: Lego Dimension
Platforms: PC
The lego dimension is also one of the best Simpsons video games. A Homer Simpson Minifigure, Homer’s automobile, and the Taunt-O-Vision are included in the Simpsons Lego Dimensions set.
Additionally, the level is named “The Mysterious Voyage Of Homer,” and it’s based on a Simpsons episode of the same name, in which Homer experiences hallucinations after eating an “insanity pepper.”
The game includes all of the bizarre humor from the episode, and there are plenty of mysteries to discover as you progress through the courses.
However, the Doctor Who pack owners will find a TARDIS dock to transport them to a secret Jetsons level, which is a charming touch.
5. The Simpsons Skateboarding
Platforms: PlayStation 2
Springfield has been transformed into a skate park for the Annual Skate Tour, complete with skate-able objects and landmarks from the television series.
Additionally, players can vie for the main prize by selecting one of the nine characters available. Over forty different moves are available to each character.
Players can put their talents to the test in a two-player skate-off or in one of the fast-paced modes, including Freeskate, Skate Fest, Trick Contest, and a game of skateboard H-O-R-S-E, which unlocks new characters, locations, and skateboards.
However, in the Skillz School mode, players can master all skateboard techniques and tricks before starting the actual game.
6. The Simpsons: Road Rage
Platforms: PlayStation 2, Xbox
The Simpsons road rage is also one of the best Simpsons video games to play. However, Mr. Burns purchased and converted the Springfield buses to nuclear power, but the suddenly radioactive buses created havoc on Springfield’s streets.
Springfield residents must raise a million dollars to buy back the buses to save their city. They do so by coming together and taxing people throughout the city to their destinations.
After collecting them in the PS2, GameCube, and Xbox versions, Mr. Burns, despite chastising them for their civil disobedience, gives them back the transit system before ominously warning them that he’ll be back and sending them down a trap door.
7. The Simpsons: Night of the Living Treehouse of Horror
The Simpsons: Night of the Living Treehouse of Horror is a platforming video game released by THQ on March 26, 2001.
However, it was developed by Software Creations, who also worked on Bart & the Beanstalk. The game is based on the Treehouse of Horror video game franchise. Game critics have given it an average rating, with praise focusing on the design.
8. The Simpsons Game
Platforms: Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable
The Simpsons Game is also one of the best Simpsons video games. The Simpsons Game allows players to control the whole Simpson family (save Maggie), each with their skills.
Aside from the training level “The Land of Chocolate,” in which only Homer is playable, and the final story, “Game Over,” in which all family members are playable, each group has two distinct family members.
However, the game is divided into sixteen episodes, each with different demanding abilities to accomplish.
The player must, for example, employ Lisa’s “Hand of Buddha” power to move enormous things and Bart’s slingshot to shut down machines in the fourth episode, “Lisa the Tree Hugger.”
Except for the last level, which features monsters already seen in previous episodes, each episode’s foes are featured.
9. The Simpsons Wrestling
Platforms: PlayStation
In the game, there are 18 characters, all of them are portrayed by the same actors who voice them in the show, and each character has their unique movements, gestures, and power moves in the ring.
Additionally, the battles are held in 3D environments from Springfield. The match is over when one wrestler pins his opponent for a three-count.
